Materials You'll Need for Your DIY Barn Door Project

Before you begin your project, it's crucial to gather all the necessary tools, including a tape measure, pencil, level, stud finder, drill, wrench, saw, and safety goggles. Having everything prepared makes the installation process much more straightforward and eliminates the headache of having to search for tools while you're in the middle of your project. Below is a list of materials you'll need to get started:

  • Sliding Door Hardware Kit
  • Barn Door Slab
  • A Header Board
  • Screws or Lag Bolts for Mounting the Header Board
  • Wall Anchors
  • Wood Screws for Attaching Rollers to the Door

Step 1: Install the Header Board

The header board provides a solid mounting surface for the sliding barn door track.

  • Use a stud finder to locate the studs in the wall above your doorway. Mark their locations with a pencil.
  • Cut the header board to be slightly longer than the track.
  • Position the header board on the wall and use a level to ensure it's even. Once it's straight, you can secure it using the screws or the lag bolts.

Tip: Make sure the header board is high enough to prevent the bottom of the barn door from dragging on the ground.

Step 2: Mount the Track

The track is used to guide the barn door when it opens and closes.

  • Mark the drill-hole locations on the header board according to the pre-drilled holes in your track. Ensure the track is level on the header board.
  • Drill pilot holes at your marked location.
  • Mount the track to the header board using the bolts and spacers provided in your kit. Keep them only hand-tightened to allow for adjustments.

Step 3: Hang the Door

Finally, you can see your space dramatically transformed by installing your new door.

  • Install the hardware on the barn door.
  • Carefully lift the door and place the rollers on the track.
  • Test the door's operation and ensure it moves smoothly and evenly along the track.
  • Once you're satisfied with the position and movement, tighten the track bolts, install the door stoppers, and add the door track.
