8 Summer Lawnmower Care Tips

Lawnmower in need of routine maintenance in MA.

Summer’s on its way, and your lawnmower is about to come out of hibernation. But before you power it up for the first time, it’s important to give it a little attention. Follow these eight summer lawnmower care tips to boost performance, promote longevity, and save you from mid-mow breakdowns.

  1. Drain the old fuel: If gas has been sitting in the tank since last fall, drain it now and add fresh fuel before your first mow. Also, consider adding a fuel stabilizer to help the fuel last for the rest of the season.
  2. Change the oil: Dirty or degraded oil reduces performance and can overheat the engine. For most walk-behind mowers, oil changes are quick: simply tip the mower on its side, drain the old oil, and refill with clean oil to the correct level. Always check your owner’s manual for the right type of oil and change intervals.
  3. Swap the spark plug: If your mower’s acting sluggish or tough to start, the spark plug might be to blame. Replacing it once a year is among the best lawnmower maintenance practices. Remove the old plug with a socket wrench and screw in a new one. Double-check the gap with a spark plug gauge—some come pre-gapped, others don’t.
  4. Clean or replace the filter: Engines need air, and a dirty filter makes them work harder than necessary. If your mower has a foam filter, clean it with soap and water, let it dry, and add a few drops of oil before reinstalling. Paper filters should be replaced entirely.
  5. Sharpen the blade: A sharp blade cuts grass cleanly, helping your lawn stay lush and green. Remove the blade, file or grind it, and reinstall it. You can also take the blade to a garden center or hardware store to have it sharpened.
  6. Tighten things up: Loose bolts and parts could fall off mid-mow. To prevent this, give your mower a once-over before the grass-cutting season arrives. Check the handle, wheels, and deck for anything that needs tightening. If your mower has inflatable tires, check the pressure. Top it off if needed to prevent uneven cuts and drag.
  7. Consider lawnmower upgrades: A few well-chosen upgrades can greatly improve your mowing game. Options include comfort grip handles, high-lift blades for improved bagging efficiency, and mulching kits to cut clippings into fine pieces that feed your lawn.
  8. Store it properly: The elements can wreak havoc on your mower. Keep it out of the sun and rain by storing it in your garage or shed. A little protection now prevents rust and electrical issues later.
